BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The weather during the last two weeks of June in Branch County was wet, miserable and frustrating especially for those who want to enjoy Michigan’s all-to-short summer.
But all of that rain turned out to be a godsend for those with agricultural interests in Branch County as it ended drought conditions.
The latest report from the U.S. Drought Monitor which was released on Thursday showed Branch and other nearby counties were considered to be “abnormally dry”.
Last week, the report showed 22 percent of lower Michigan was in a severe drought. That area was reduced to less than five percent this week.
The only counties affected by a severe drought are Sanilac, Huron, Arenac, Iosco, Alcona, Manistee and Benzie.
The area of moderate drought conditions in Michigan was also reduced from nearly 70 percent to about 39 percent.
Except for June 22, the M.S.U. Extension Service weather station at the Bloom Dairy Farm recorded rain every day between June 18 and 30. During that time, 6.13 inches of rain was measured. That brought the total amount of rain for the month of June at that location to 7.25 inches. Branch County normally gets about three-and-a-half inches of rain during June.
After all of the recent soggy weather, the National Weather Service is forecasting a dry period through the holiday weekend. The next mention of precipitation is not until Tuesday.
