FREMONT, IN (WTVB) – An 18-year-old from Angola died Tuesday night in an apparent accidental shooting at a home in Fremont.
Indiana State Police say troopers along with Fremont Police and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department responded to the 100 block of Baum Street to investigate a 911 call reporting a person suffering from a gunshot.
A preliminary investigation by State Police detectives indicated this was an isolated incident involving a pair of 18 year old boys who were handling a shotgun inside the residence. While handling the shotgun, the weapon discharged. Caiden David Hulliberger was shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Steuben County Coroner.
As of now, this is being investigated as an accidental shooting incident, however, this remains an active and ongoing criminal investigation. The Steuben County Coroner had scheduled an autopsy for Wednesday afternoon at the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center in Fort Wayne.
Identification of the other youngster is being withheld until the Steuben County Prosecutor is presented the completed investigation and determines if any criminal charges will be filed.
