HILLSDALE COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The National Weather Service says a weak tornado developed west of the intersection of South Bunn Road and Cole/Bankers Road in Hillsdale County during the Tuesday night storms.
The tornado was given a EF-1 rating. It traveled for over five miles, had a maximum width of 450 yards and the estimated peak winds were estimated at over 100 miles an hour.
The tornado was on the ground for six minutes between 7:45 p.m. and 7:51 p.m..
It moved quickly east along the north side of the road causing significant tree damage east to Cambria Road.
A pair of 1,000 pound hay bales were picked up from a field south of Bankers Road and thrown into a ditch and yard on the north side of the road.
The tornado briefly lifted as it crossed Cambria Road but touched down again on the east side of South Hillsdale Road where several outbuildings and a silo were destroyed.
The tornado intensified further as it moved through the Hillsdale Golf and Country Club.
There was considerable widespread tree damage which included several trees being uprooted.
The tornado quickly weakened as it moved across Baw Breese Lake with a few branches down along Oakwood Drive.
No further tornado damage was observed past this point.
The National Weather Service says damage east of Osseo as well as in Allen was consistent with straight line winds.
