UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – A space heater that got to close to a couch is being blamed for a fire in a two story structure at 216 Crane Street in Union City on Thursday morning.
Union City Police Chief Chris Mathis says there are two living units in the duplex at that location. He says the occupant of the unit where the fire started tried to put it out with a washer hose but was unsuccessful.
Crane between South Broadway and Fenton Street had to be blocked off due to the fire which was reported just after 10:00 a.m..
The fire was reported out at about 11:10 a.m. Firefighters remained on the scene until 12:40 p.m..
The Union City Fire Department received mutual aid from Burlington and Athens firefighters. Lifecare Ambulance, Union City Police and the village’s Department of Public Safety were also at the scene.
No injuries were reported. The structure was saved but there was smoke and water damage to the interior.
