COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Coldwater man entered guilty pleas to three charges on Monday in Branch County Circuit Court after he resisted members of the Michigan State Police last June during an investigation into a physical confrontation at a Bethel Township residence.
A court spokesperson said 49-year-old Brett Donley entered guilty pleas to two counts of resisting and obstructing police as well as to a charge of domestic violence.
A charge of assault by strangulation as well as an habitual offender fourth offense notice were dismissed by prosecutors in exchange for the guilty pleas.
A sentencing hearing was scheduled for December 6.
Donley was arrested after the State Police investigated an alleged incident in which the defendant was accused of putting his hands around the neck of another man and applying pressure during an argument. The alleged victim managed to get away and told police at a nearby party store what happened.
According to court documents, the suspect refused to cooperate with police as they tried to execute a search warrant and eventually assumed a fighting posture. Police had to deploy a taser but Donley managed to take out one of the barbs and continued to disobey verbal commands.
Donley eventually followed commands and was taken into custody.
Court documents also show Donley’s criminal history goes back to 1990.
