BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Police agencies around Michigan are urging drivers to be extra cautious as the firearm deer hunting season got underway on Monday.
There were over 51,000 vehicle-deer crashes in Michigan during 2020 which resulted in nearly 1,400 injuries and five deaths.
Two of the people killed were motorcycle riders.
Nearly 78 percent of vehicle-deer crashes involved passenger cars.
Records also indicate that over 43 percent of the crashes happen during the last three months of the year.
Statistics from www.michigantrafficcrashfacts.org showed that there were 816 vehicle-deer crashes in Branch County during 2020. As for neighboring, 916 were reported in Hillsdale County, 936 in Calhoun County and 533 in St. Joseph County.
Heavily populated Oakland County had the highest number of vehicle-deer crashes in 2020 with 1,854. Kent County was second with 1,712 followed by Jackson County with 1,471.
