COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Pansophia Academy students in the sixth through 12th grade will be switched to virtual instruction for Wednesday and Thursday due to seven COVID-19 cases being reported in those grades since Monday and the lack of staff members.
The school was notified last week of three staff members who were positive for COVID-19 which resulted in six staff members being quarantined. Those staff members will not be able to return to work this week.
The staff members are not teachers, but with so many support staff missing, it has been a strain on Pansophia’s academic process.
Even though there is no quarantine order set by the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency, OSHA is still requiring employers to quarantine employees who are close contacts.
Classes for Pansophia students in kindergarten through the fifth grade will remain in person on Wednesday and Thursday.
Pansophia Academy officials have decided to close the school on Friday as their Thanksgiving break will start a day earlier than originally scheduled. Pansophia was originally scheduled to be closed all of next week for Thanksgiving.
The off day on Friday will be used as one of the allowed snow days and virtual learning will not be required.
A post on the school’s Facebook page said the Friday closing is due to a lack of adequate staffing, no subs being available and the staff being in need of a mental health day.
If for some reason there’s an additional influx of staff members who need to be quarantined, Pansophia will have to close sooner than Friday and use means of virtual instruction.
