COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – After 25 years, the seven county Southwest Michigan Solid Waste Consortium is disbanding.
Branch County Commissioner Tim Stoll told the Board of Commissioners during their work session on Thursday that the Consortium Board decided this week to dissolve at the end of the year.
Stoll said it was felt a technical advisory committee was in a better position to have an influence over recycling needs and solid waste issues in southwest Michigan.
He added Branch County will be getting some funds from the breakup.
Stoll recommended that the money be used for a recycling event in Branch County but a decision will be made at a later time. He also said Branch County will continue to have a yearly tire recycling event.
Calhoun County recently passed a resolution to leave and that the group should be dissolved after they expressed several concerns. The concerns included the lack of an audit. The consortium consisted of Branch, Calhoun, Allegan, Berrien, Cass, St. Joseph and Van Buren Counties.
The consortium was put together as a way to secure grants.
