COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater High School gymnastics team defeated the Saline Hornets 132.775 to 125.025 on Wednesday night in a South Central Gymnastics League Conference match up. The Cardinals are now 2-0 in the conference.
Coldwater’s Avery Boyce finished third on the vault with a score of 8.45 points. It was a second qualifying score and a season best for the senior co-captain. Four other Cardinals picked up qualifying scores.
The Cardinals turned the meet around on the uneven bars, passing Saline and never looking back. Coldwater earned a total of 31.725 team points compared to Saline‘s 27.575. This time it was Coldwater earning four of the top five places led by senior Layla Schoch at 8.075 points. The co-captain tied Saline‘s Briar Mackey for first place. Charlotte Calhoun was close behind with her mark of 8.05 points.
The team posted their highest beam total in two years with 33.775 points. Coldwater stuck three of their routines and seven Cardinals took home individual qualifying scores. Calhoun once again brought home the first place finish on the balance beam with the mark of 8.85 points. Schoch was next in line at 8.45.
Coldwater closed out the competition on the floor exercise, besting the Hornets by a margin of 34.275 to 31.1 points. Coldwater was led by senior McKenna Hantz who posted an impressive 8.775 for her new routine – just shy from her personal best mark. Junior Randi Dudek earned 8.625 points for second place.
Layla Schoch claimed the top spot in the all-around competition with her tally of 33.15 points. Avery Boyce posted a personal best all-around score of 32.1 for the second place finish. Randi Dudek was next in line at 31.75 points. Gabby Schoch took the fourth place slot with her mark of 31.425 total points.
Coldwater will travel to Rockford on Saturday for an invitational for their next competition. The gymnasts are hosting youth gymnastics lessons starting next week for children ages 6 and up. They will also host a gymnastics clinic for all ages on the 22nd of January.
