JACKSON, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater High School Gymnastics team lost 136.3 to 128.975 at Jackson on Wednesday for a South Central Gymnastics League conference match up against the defending state champions.
Jackson is comprised of six area schools as a cooperative program and has recently been dominating the competition. Coldwater’s mark qualified the Cardinals for the M.H.S.A.A. Regional competition. Coldwater posted their fourth straight regional team score in a row.
Coach Kim Nichols said, “It was a tough loss tonight, but I reminded the girls that we earned 4 for 4 in the team qualifying scores and that is a difficult feat to accomplish in itself.”
Coldwater began the competition on the uneven bars where they tallied 31.15 points. Charlotte Calhoun led the squad with her efforts at 8.4, earning second place overall. Senior co-captain Avery Boyce came up big with a personal best of 7.7 on the event.
Coldwater posted a 32.955 on the vault for their second event. Calhoun was consistent with her mark at 8.4 and tied for 4th place. Boyce collected 8.275 points to finish fifth.
The third rotation for the Cardinals was on the floor exercise where the squad posted their highest team total of the evening at 33.85 points. Every Cardinal that competed in the varsity competition earned qualifying scores. McKenna Hantz finished fourth as she collected 8.75 points. Randi Dudek and Calhoun tied for fifth as they each earned 8.5 points each.
Coldwater only needed to pick up 22.075 points in their final rotation to earn a team qualifying score. The Cardinals came through with flying colors, earning 31.05 points on the event. Hantz led the squad with 8.175 points to claim third place.
After being sidelined due to an injury, Hantz made her senior all around debut posting an impressive 32.55 points. Calhoun tallied 32.775 points for her efforts against Jackson. Avery Boyce earned 31.15 points overall.
Coldwater will travel to Lowell on Saturday for their invitational. The gymnasts are hosting youth lessons on Tuesday evenings at the auxiliary gymnasium.
