PORTAGE, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals broke open a tight game in the second half as they defeated the Portage Central Mustangs 77-58 in the final game of the regular season.
The Cardinals fell behind 20-17 after the first quarter and led 32-29 at the half.
They then used a 24-12 third quarter to take control of the game. Coldwater led 56-41 after the third quarter and cruised to the win in the final stanza.
Coldwater’s Brandon Downs erupted for 32 points and nine assists while Donte Work added 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals while Evan Sloan had 14 points.

The Cardinals finished the regular season at 17-3. After getting the top seed in the Division One district tournament they are hosting next week, the Cardinals will face either Gull Lake or Kalamazoo Loy Norrix in a district semifinal game next Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
Portage Central won the JV game over Coldwater 56-29. Ayden Dirschell and Niko Downs each scored 11 points.
Portage Central also won the freshman game 66-14.
