UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Community School Board of Education approved the hiring of Doug Counterman as the new varsity head football coach on Monday night.
Counterman is a Union City graduate who has served the football program in various capacities over the years.
Board member Kyle Miller was among those who approved the hiring.
Board member Jenn Searles appreciated the job Randy Widener did last fall when he took over the program during the fourth week of the season and helped the Chargers get into the M.H.S.A.A. playoffs.
Widener had been the J.V. coach before taking over as varsity coach when Clint Colborn was suspended.
Union City bounced back from a 1-2 start and finished 6-5. They had a four game winning streak which included a 24-0 victory over Niles Brandywine in a Division Seven pre-district playoff game.
