Bessie Lea (Rogers) Krieg, 77, of Union City, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2022 at Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo.
A memorial gathering and luncheon will be held at 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2022 at Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation, 1276 Tate Trail, Union City, MI 49094.
Bessie was born October 10, 1944 to Leslie and Verna (Grames) Rogers at the Coldwater Hospital. Bessie lived in Union City her entire life and attended and graduated Tekonsha Night School, earning her GED in 1983. On January 21, 1972, she Bessie married Rex Krieg, Sr. at the courthouse in Marshall.
Bessie, who also went by “Lulu” and even “Banty Legs” (Rex Sr.’s nickname for her), worked as a waitress at several restaurants: The Chatterbox Cafe, Fabiano’s, and the Angola Motor Speedway, to name a few. When not at work, Bessie had quite the collection of animals at her “Funny Farm.” This included donkeys, cattle, pigs and a llama, as well as her favorites, Lucy the Amazon Parrot and Precious, her furry canine companion. Bessie loved animals, except snakes. She hated snakes!
Apart from spending time with her animals, Bessie might be found knitting or crocheting, mushroom hunting, or even possibly at the races at Butler Motor Speedway or Angola Motorsport Speedway.
She is survived by her husband Rex Krieg, Sr.; her children, Charles “Chuck” Jenkins of Union City, Tammy English of Athens, Mary Baurer of Union City, and Rex Krieg Jr., of Union City; her grandchildren, Megan Hildreth, Michael Holbrook, Kandie Jenkins, J.J. Burlingame, Chris Baumeister, Ryan Jenkins, Ryan Shane, and Michelle Jenkins; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and her sister, Judy Rogers of Tekonsha.
Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Verna Rogers; her siblings, Virginia King and L.G. Rogers; and her best friend, Lois Burkhardt.
Memorial donations are suggested to the family.
