LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced Wednesday that major repairs on local bridges will continue this month as the Michigan Department of Transportation’s bridge bundling project moves forward.
The $196 million program will allow the state to execute Phase II on 59 bridges including two in Branch County.
This phase will focus on closed and load-posted bridges. Some will be permanently removed while others will be fully replaced.
The recommendations include the replacement of the load restricted Central Road bridge over the Coldwater River during Fiscal Year 2023 at a cost of $1,970,000.
In addition, the Gower Road bridge over the Coldwater River will be removed during Fiscal Year 2022 at a cost of $500,000.
Five bridge bundling projects started in March as part of a pilot program to repair 19 bridges that are said to be in serious or critical condition under Phase I.
Those bridges are owned by local agencies.
Each bridge will have its superstructure replaced, which includes full removal and replacement of the bridge deck and supporting beams. MDOT bridge staff and consultants are doing all the design and construction administration work for the bridge bundling program.
