CONCORD, MI (WTVB) – The Quincy Orioles hung on to defeat Concord 5-4 in the first game of a scheduled Big 8 Conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.
The Yellowjackets had the winning run on base in the last of the seventh but Quincy pitcher Karsen Maurer induced a ground out to end the Concord threat.
Maurer threw the final two innings in relief of Brady Mescher to earn the save.
Mescher started for the Orioles on the mound. He gave up just four hits and fanned six before turning the ball over to Maurer.
Mescher and Maurer led the Orioles also at the plate as Mescher slugged three doubles and drove in three runs. Maurer also had a run scoring double.
Ethan Copas swiped two bases in the Oriole win.
Game 2 of the doubleheader was suspended after three innings with Concord leading 7-0. The game will be resumed in the fourth inning at a later date.
The Orioles move to 7-6 on the season and will host Stockbridge, Adrian Madison and Kalamazoo Cougars in the Quincy All Sports Invite on this coming Saturday.
