Edward J. “Ed” Phelps, 91, of Tekonsha passed away Saturday, May 7, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. The family is being served by Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation in Union City.
Ed was born on August 5, 1930 to Oliver and Nettie (Ewers) Phelps on the family farm in Tekonsha. He graduated from Tekonsha High School with the Class of 1948.
In high school Ed was very active in sports, receiving the Athlete of the Years in 1948.
October 1, 1950 he married LaDeama Collyer at the First Congregational Church in Union City, They shared 71 years together.
Ed was a farmer all of his life raising dairy cattle and crops. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, playing cards, and raising the best garden in Tekonsha, best known for his sweet corn. He and Deama were members of the Tekon Trippers Square Dance Club.
Surviving Ed are his wife LaDeama Phelps of Tekonsha, children, John Phelps of Tekonsha, Sharlynn (Mike) Winters of Volin, SD, Rick Phelps of Tekonsha, Loralee (Ron) Tesch of Tekonsha, grandchildren, Angela (Justin) Alford of Normal, IL, Kakki (Donald) Johnson of Camden, Rachael (Andy) Hinkley of Battle Creek, Jamie (Brad) Thomas of Tekonsha, Nikki (JR) Marshall of Frankfort, OH, Eric “Pud” (Stacey) Phelps of Tekonsha, Tiffany (Todd) Boone of Lapel, IN, step-grandchildren, Russ Tesch, Annette Stuart, Rhonda Fairchikd, 16 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, daughter -in-law, Bertha Phelps, great grandson, Cameron Thomas, sisters, LeMoyne Brownell, Marjorie Patten, and Beverly Stemaly.
Memorial contributions may be made to Oaklawn Hospice, St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital or the Tekonsha Athletic Boosters.
