JACKSON, MI (WTVB) – Republican Congressman Tim Walberg is heading back to Washington, D.C. for another two years after he scored an overwhelming victory on Tuesday over Democratic challenger Bart Goldberg.
As of midnight, Walberg had collected 64 percent of the vote in the newly drawn Fifth Congressional District while Goldberg had 34 percent.
Walberg said in a statement released by his office, “”From Lake Michigan to Lake Erie, I am humbled to receive such an outpouring of support across the entirety of southern Michigan. To the majority of voters in Michigan’s new 5th District who I have previously represented, I am grateful for your continued support. To the voters in the new portion of the district who voted for me the first time, it is an honor to be your voice in Congress. A special thank you to our many incredible volunteers and supporters who helped power our grassroots campaign to victory.”
With Fred Upton’s retirement, Walberg becomes the longest service Michigan Republican in Congress.
Walberg has served as the Seventh District Congressional representative since 2011. He also served from 2007 until 2009.
