COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Administrator Bud Norman told the 911 Board on Wednesday that the last payment to J and K Communications for the Enhanced 911 Project has been made.
Norman said one of the next steps is to figure out how much the monthly surcharge that was approved by Branch County voters two years ago can be curtailed.
Voters said yes to a maximum monthly surcharge of $2.52 per phone device to help fund the new 800/700 MHz Radio System which replaced an old system that dated back to the early 1990’s.
Norman said the decision to go with five towers instead of six saved money.
The new 911 system has been widely praised by Branch County police and fire agencies. The new equipment was pursued in order to provide better coverage and increase safety.
The surcharge would raise $2-point-4 million annually and would not go longer than six years starting in July of 2021.
