GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater trailed by as many as 21 points during their game against Pewamo-Westphalia Tuesday at the Cornerstone High School Holiday Tournament. A furious fourth-quarter comeback attempt saw the Cardinals whittle the lead down to 5 points before the Pirates pulled away for the 63-54 victory.
P-W led 13-8 after the first quarter, 31-20 at halftime, and 50-29 after three quarters. Coldwater outscored the Pirates 25-13 in the final frame, but came up short to finish the night with a 1-4 record.
Elijah Sloan drained three 3-pointers off the bench and led the Cardinals with 13 points and 3 rebounds. Zach Coffing and Donte Work each scored 10, with Work adding 8 rebounds and Coffing contributing 2 assists and 3 steals.
Brothers Jamison and Grady Eklund led all scorers with 20 points apiece for the Pirates, who improved to 4-1.
In the other Boys Green Division Contest Tuesday, Sparta defeated Allendale 51-44. Thursday’s Green Division games are now set:
- Consolation: Allendale vs. Coldwater, 10 a.m. (Coverage on WTVB will begin Thursday at 9:45 a.m.)
- Championship: Sparta vs. Pewamo-Westphalia, 11:45 a.m.

The JV team lost to Pewamo-Westphalia 44-41 to drop their record to 3-2. Gavin Taylor had 13 points, while Jackson Reilly had 10 points and 6 rebounds. The Cardinals will take on Allendale Thursday at 10 a.m. at NorthPointe Christian High School.
The freshman team fell to the Pirates 68-37. Owen Tappenden had a team-high 11 points and 7 rebounds, with Julian Thompson adding 9. Coldwater will next face Forest Hills Northern Thursday at 1 p.m. at Forest Hills Eastern High School.
