COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The suspect in the alleged stabbing of two men in the 1200 block of Burlington Road just south of the Branch-Calhoun County line was arraigned late Tuesday afternoon in Branch County District Court.
31-year-old Dustin Antone Sprague of Jackson is being held in the Branch County Jail on a $1 million bond.
The stabbing victims were identified by the Branch County Sheriff’s Department as 33-year-old Edward Guilford of Union City and 33-year-old Curtis White of Coldwater.
At last report, Guilford was hospitalized in serious condition while White was treated and released on Monday from Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.
According to Branch County court documents, White told investigators Sprague used to work for him but was fired in 2021. The suspect claimed he thought White was following him the night before the incident.
Branch County Prosecutor Zach Stempien says Sprague is facing two counts of assault with intent to murder as well as a charge of first degree home invasion in connection with the Monday afternoon incident.
Not guilty pleas were entered on behalf of Sprague who is scheduled to appear for a probable cause hearing on January 17. A preliminary exam was scheduled for January 24.
This is not Sprague’s first run with the law. Court documents say he was out on bond in another domestic violence/strangulation case in another county. Terms of the bond included the wearing of a tether but Stempien accused Sprague of cutting off his tether which led to a bench warrant being issued for his arrest.
According to Michigan Department of Corrections on line records, Sprague was convicted in 2010 for second degree home invasion in Lake County.
