BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The Quincy Orioles used clutch foul shooting down the stretch to defeat Branch County rival Bronson 45-41 on Thursday night in a Big 8 Conference boys basketball game on the Orioles home court.
Quincy jumped out to a 23-13 halftime lead. The Vikings spent the second half playing catch up and tied the game 38-38 with less than a minute to play.
The Orioles managed to hit seven of eight foul shots over the final 36 seconds as they improved to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the Big 8.
Ashtyn Morris and Sam Sawyer both had double-doubles for Quincy. They both scored 13 points. Morris had 15 rebounds while Sawyer had 11 boards. Riley Miner added 12 points.
Bronson’s Aden Hathaway scored a game-high 21 points. The Vikings drop to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the Big 8.
Also in the Big 8 on Thursday night, Union City lost at McNett Fieldhouse to Jonesville 57-33. The Comets are in first place in the Big 8 with a conference record of 4-0. They are 8-1 overall.
Union City drops to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the Big 8.
Concord defeated Reading 45-44.
Coldwater and Battle Creek Pennfield split their boys underclassmen basketball games on Thursday night.
Coldwater won the J.V. game 49-34. Julian Thompson led Coldwater with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Austin Downs added eight points. Downs and Kaden Lewis both had four assists.
Pennfield won the freshman game 38-31. The Cardinals were led by Owen Tappenden with 14 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Pablo Ocampo added eight points.
