STEUBEN COUNTY, IN (WTVB) – Two men from Massachusetts were arrested early Monday morning on the Indiana Toll Road in Steuben County when a traffic stop led to the discovery of about 10 pounds of marijuana.
Indiana State Police say a Toll Road Post Trooper stopped a 2020 Mercedes SUV for an unsafe lane change at about 1:15 a.m. near the 140 mile marker.
The vehicle was occupied by two men who reported to be traveling from California back to Massachusetts, both alleged to be showing signs of impairment.
The Trooper said there was a strong odor of Marijuana coming from the vehicle along with open alcohol containers.
A large garbage bag was found in the spare tire well during a probable cause search of the vehicle.
The bag contained 10 bags of suspected Marijuana, each weighing about one pound.
The passenger, 30-year-old Abdulkarim Mbarushimana was arrested and booked into custody on a felony count of Dealing Marijuana.
After completing a battery of field sobriety tests with the driver, 24-year-old Eric Njoroge Mwangi was arrested and booked into Steuben County Jail on charges of Dealing Marijuana, Operating While Intoxicated and Possession of Marijuana.
Troopers from the Fort Wayne Post, Steuben County Sheriff’s Department deputies and Bill’s Towing assisted.
