STEUBEN COUNTY, IN (WTVB) – A pair of fugitives that were being sought by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department are now in custody in the Steuben County Jail.
51-year-old Donald Gene Squires was taken into custody late Wednesday afternoon without incident at a residence near Howe, Indiana after a brief standoff with Sheriff’s deputies from both LaGrange and Steuben Counties. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Division and the LaGrange Town Marshal’s Office also assisted with the arrest.
Squires was wanted on a warrant that was issued by Steuben Superior Court on January 27. He has been charged with two counts of Operating While Intoxicated causing Death and one count of OWI causing Catastrophic Injury. All three alleged offenses are level four felonies in the State of Indiana.
The arrest warrant comes after the investigation into the crash last August on State Road 120 just east of Orland, Indiana that claimed the lives of 43-year-old Lonnie Lee Bright and his 33-year-old wife Breanna of Long Beach Lake. The couple’s daughter Journey, who turned six-years-old a month after the crash, was badly injured and continues to recover.
Meanwhile, 26-year-old Jared Michael Lesher was taken into custody without incident early Wednesday evening at a residence on Angola’s east side.
Angola Police responded to an anonymous Crime Stoppers tip concerning Lesher’s whereabouts and were able to locate him.
Lesher is charged with sever offenses under two separate causes. Under the first cause, Lesher was wanted for Armed Robbery, Intimidation and two counts of theft. Under the second cause, Lesher is facing three counts of Intimidation.
Sheriff Rodney Robinson says Lesher was on a court ordered temporary furlough when he cut his ankle monitor and fled. Additional criminal charges for failure to return to lawful detention are being sought.
