COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A second School Resource Officer is in the works for Coldwater Community Schools as the district’s Board of Education approved a Memorandum of Agreement between City of Coldwater Police Department and C.C.S. on Monday night.
Legg Middle School recently learned that it was awarded a grant of just over $109,000 for three years by the Michigan State Police Office of School Safety as part of its School Resource Officer Resource Program.
School officials plan to use the grant money to hire a separate School Resource Officer for Legg Middle School beginning in the 2023-24 school year.
Currently, Coldwater Police Officer Robin Swartz splits her time between Legg Middle School and Coldwater High School.
Swartz has been the lone S.R.O. for the district since the original agreement between the City of Coldwater and Coldwater Community Schools was approved in June of 2020.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced on January 17, 2023 that 195 school districts, intermediate school districts, and public-school academies will get nearly $25 million to support the hiring of the officers for the next three years.
Officials from the governor’s office said at the time that the program is set to improve safety and security for more than 334,000 students.
Other districts receiving funds for an S.R.O. include Camden-Frontier, Battle Creek Lakeview, Marshall, Harper Creek, Hillsdale, Hillsdale County I.S.D., Pittsford, Reading and White Pigeon.
The funds, which are administered by the Michigan State Police, are slated to support salaries, benefits, and training for school resource officers.
