NILES, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan State Police Niles post troopers are investigating a two-vehicle crash on I-94 that killed one person on Tuesday, April 4.
Authorities say it happened around 5:42 p.m. on westbound I-94 near mile marker 16 in Berrien County’s Lake Township.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a Chevy Equinox was traveling westbound and went to pass another vehicle. When that driver returned to their lane, they struck an SUV in the rear.
The driver of the Chevy, a 39-year-old Gary Indiana man, then lost control and ran off the roadway and collided with a tree. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the SUV that was struck in the rear, a 32-year-old Stevensville woman, was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured, while the driver of the Chevy was not wearing his.
Police say drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash.
