UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Union City hosted the Climax-Scotts/St. Philip co-op baseball and softball teams for doubleheaders on Friday, the day before prom.
Baseball: Climax-Scotts 11, Union City 7 (Game 1)
Baseball: Union City 3, Climax-Scotts 2 (Game 2)
The Chargers split their baseball doubleheader against the Panthers, losing the opener 11-7 before taking the nightcap 3-2.
In the first game, Climax-Scotts scored six runs in the top of the first inning and were on a roll from there. Mitchell Graham was 4-for-4 with 4 RBIs to lead the Union City offense. Carson Liles and Simon Swartzle had two hits apiece, and Cullen Decker drove in two runs.
The second game saw the Chargers jump out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Panthers scored single runs in the fifth and sixth, but couldn’t get any closer. Tucker Zweng was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs, while Nolan Chard went 2-for-3 and drove in the other Charger run. Max Payne was 3-for-3 at the plate. Swartzle was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts.
Union City is now 8-8 overall and will host Reading on Tuesday.
Softball: Climax-Scotts 14, Union City 5 (Game 1)
Softball: Climax-Scotts 13, Union City 10 (Game 2)
The Climax-Scotts hitters feasted on Union City pitching during the softball doubleheader, amassing 33 hits in both games as the defeated the Chargers 14-5 and 13-10.
The Panthers broke the first game wide open with seven runs in their half of the seventh. Lauren Tundevold and Jezelle Nagel each went 3-for-4, while Brooke Thomas was 2-for-3 and Madison Krummrey drove in a pair of runs.
Union City had a 6-5 lead through the first two innings of the second game, before Climax-Scotts took the lead for goos with seven runs in the third. Hannah Schofield was 2-for-4 with two doubles, with Krummrie and Ambrielle Phelps each going 2-for-3.
The Chargers will take an 11-7 record to their doubleheader Tuesday against Reading.
