BRONSON TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan State Police have released more details about a crash over the weekend in which the vehicle involved damaged nearly two dozen headstones and grave markers in the St. Mary’s Cemetery on Orland Road south of Bronson.
The crash happened at about 2:15 a.m. Saturday morning.
State Police say according to their preliminary investigation, the driver of a pick-up truck was heading south on Orland Road when the vehicle went out of control, ran off the road and crashed into the cemetery.
After the damage took place in the cemetery, the vehicle overturned and came to rest on its side.
According to a press release issued by the State Police on Wednesday morning, there was a discrepancy at the scene about who was driving between a woman, who was found with the vehicle, and a man who is currently under investigation to determine whether he was the actual driver.
The man was found in the vicinity of the venue, but not with vehicle. He also had injuries consistent with a crash.
State Police are seeking lab analysis from blood evidence collected at the scene to determine exactly who was in driving, therefore no identifying info for either individual will be released until they are certain.
No serious injuries were reported. Alcohol is believed to be a factor and seat belts were used.
This case remains open pending further investigation, lab analysis, and prosecutor’s review.
