KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Warm weather is here, and so are ticks!
And health officials across Michigan are warning that those pests can spread Lyme disease. And because of this, they are urging Michiganders to protect themselves and their loved ones while engaging in outdoor activities by following a number of prevention tips.
DURING outside activity:
- Use bug spray that contains DEET
- Wear light-colored, protective clothing
- Tuck pant legs into socks
- Avoid tick habitats like brushy, wooded areas
AFTER being outside, prevent tick bites by:
- Perform “tick checks” on humans and pets after being outdoors, even in your own yard.
- Check clothing and remove ticks from your clothes – light-colored clothing makes ticks easier to see.
- Shower soon after coming inside.
- Place clothes in a dryer on high heat for at least 10 minutes to kill ticks you might have missed.
