COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A resolution and sales agreement with Ibrahim and Khalil Abdullah to purchase the city owned building at 71 and 73 West Chicago was introduced by the Coldwater City Council on Monday night.
Their $80,000 offer was the highest of four received by the city after it was recently listed with a local realtor.
The Abdullahs plan to develop the property into a international grocery and Mediterranean restaurant. City Manager Keith Baker says the Abdullahs currently operate the Fort Wayne Halal Meat & Grocery as well as Almadina Foods and Jerusalem Bakery and Grill in Fishers, Indiana.
Council member John Petzko felt the proposal from the Abdullahs would be a positive addition to downtown Coldwater.
Petzko and Mayor Tom Kramer were pleased a transaction will soon take place.
City Manager Keith Baker says the City recently solicited a competitive market analysis that placed an estimated value and list price of the property at $75,000.
The offers ranged from $66,000 to $80,000 for the building which was donated by the Richard A. Kerr Trust to the city in 2018. It used to be the home of Ba Ba Black Sheep and Emmy’s Salon.
A couple of development proposals for the vacant building did not work out in recent years and the Council took no action on a third offer during their last meeting on September 11. Jennifer Wingard and Penny S. Beemer made a $10,000 offer two weeks ago with plans to utilize the building for an event venue on the front half of the first floor of the building, two short term rentals on the back half, and four apartments on the second floor.
Under the City Charter, the conveyance must be tabled for 30 days. Other bids may be received and considered by the City during that time. Due to the Council’s schedule, the first regularly scheduled meeting after the 30-day time period at which the sale could be acted upon is on November 13.
