GIRARD TOWNSHIP, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A large break in a gasoline pipeline operated by British Petroleum on Tuesday night led to an evacuation of nearby residents in northern Branch County.
Branch County Emergency Management Director Tim Miner said in a press release issued early Wednesday morning that the incident took place at approximately 9:40 p.m. in the vicinity of Bell Road between Girard and Vincent Lake Roads.
He said it led to an immediate response from emergency services and the company’s safety teams. In addition, Miner says local emergency services have taken appropriate measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the community in and around the affected area.
Branch County Emergency Management, the Tekonsha Fire Department and the Michigan State Police initially coordinated the response.
As of Wednesday morning, crews are working to isolate the break and control the spill.
Miner says Branch County is working closely with local, state, and federal agencies to mitigate the environmental impact and remediate the affected area as quickly and effectively as possible.
Further details will be provided as the incident progresses.
