LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The “Growing Michigan Together Council” was formed by Governor Whitmer back in June to grow Michigan’s population, look at ways to successfully attract and retain talent, find long-term funding solutions for higher education, and develop strategies for upgrading and modernizing transportation and water infrastructure.
At that time, the Chief Executive intended to have a Republican representative from the State Senate on the council.
The GOP caucus put forward Branch County’s representative in the State Senate, Jonathan Lindsey of Allen, for consideration but he says he has not filled that seat.
Governor Whitmer participated in a fireside chat this week at the University of Chicago. She says the work to attract new people to the state will be a major focus for Michigan politicians even after her term expires.
Last week, the panel met for the third time since it formed by a gubernatorial executive order.
The meeting was behind closed doors, with reporters barred from attending in person and told to watch an online live stream that proved to be fraught with connectivity problems, as well as having no way for viewers to make their intentions known to council members during the session.
The panel has two more meetings planned for November 2nd and December 1st before submitting a report to the Governor and to both legislative chambers.
