BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The 2023-2024 Branch County boys high school basketball season tips off on Tuesday night.
The Coldwater Cardinals open their season at Portage Central. Coverage on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 WTVB will start at around 6:45 p.m..
The Bronson Vikings and the Union City Chargers will also play their season openers on Tuesday night.
Bronson will be at Battle Creek St. Philip while Union City travels to Hillsdale.
Season opening games for Quincy and Tekonsha will be on Friday night. The Orioles will be at Grass Lake while Tekonsha plays at Litchfield.
The new season ushers in significant rule changes from the National Federation of State High School Associations when it comes to foul shooting.
Both boys and girls high school basketball teams will shoot two free throws for common fouls when in the “bonus” thus eliminating the one-and-one scenario.
Once a team reaches five fouls in a quarter, the opposition will get two shots for each foul called. Team fouls will reset at the end of each quarter.
Previously, teams were awarded the one-and-one bonus when their opponents committed seven fouls in a half and two foul shots when 10 fouls were committed each half.
