COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The 2023-24 boys basketball season for the Coldwater Cardinals ended on opening night of the MHSAA Tournament, as Battle Creek Central picked up a 49-46 victory at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium in the Division 1 District which Gull Lake is hosting.
The two teams played to a 12-12 tie after the first quarter, and the Cardinals took a slim 22-21 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Bearcats outscored Coldwater 14-12 in the third and fourth quarters on their way to their second win of the season. The Cards had a couple of chances to force overtime. A late 3-point attempt by Niko Downs fell short, and his follow-up try was blocked at the buzzer.
Ayden Dirschell led Coldwater with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Niko Downs added 8 points, 6 boards, and 4 assists. Jackson Reilly had 6 points and 9 rebounds as Coldwater’s season ends with a 6-17 record.
Michael Mosley led all scorers with 20 points for Battle Creek Central, while Jeremiah Warren added 13. The Bearcats will take a 2-19 record into their District Semifinal game Wednesday night at Gull Lake against the Blue Devils.

On the other side of the bracket, Harper Creek won their seventh straight game by beating visiting Sturgis 63-44. The Beavers will face crosstown rival Lakeview in the other District Semifinal game Wednesday at Gull Lake.
