COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council approved an Obsolete Property Rehabilitation Abatement Certificate on Monday night for what is now a vacant building at 22 West Pearl Street.
City Assessor Samantha Albright says GNR Rentals & Real Estate bought the property on the south portion of the Chandler Plaza last November.
According to Albright, the new property owners plan to invest over $928,000 which is far above the OPRA certificate’s minimum requirement of $50,000.
Albright says there is an extensive amount of damage to the building after a fire in November of 2020.
Coldwater Fire Department officials said at the time that a shorted electrical outlet caused the fire which resulted in $60,000 worth of damage. Frequent vandalism took place at the building for several years following the fire.
The city’s approval is subject to approval from the State of Michigan.
Would be good to see this historical old building revitalized. Towns lose their identities when they allow these rare historical buildings to fall to ruin. I hope the Blue Hat house on US 12 gets revived as well.
