COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Board of Commissioners are scheduled to approve the hiring of a new District Court Bailiff on Tuesday after the retirement of Mike Fadden.
Fadden retired last Friday after more than 27 years of service to the county.
Commissioners were told during their work session last Thursday there was only one person interested in the position but the starting pay would need to be increased to the five year level before they would accept it.
The current starting wage is $18.67 and the five year level is $23.35, per the contract the county has with the Service Employees International Union.
Branch County District Court Judge Brent Weigle told Commissioners the position has to be filled by someone who is certified by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards so they would have arresting powers.
Commissioner Jon Houtz felt a reclassification of the position should be looked at.
Commission Chair Tim Stoll wanted to take it a step further.
The Commissioners eventually decided to bring the request forward to Tuesday’s meeting and that the classification would be reviewed during contract negotiations with the union in 2025.
