OVID TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A fire involving a 48 foot cattle trailer on northbound I-69 near the MDOT Weight Station tied up traffic for a time on Monday morning.
The fire was apparently caused by an overheated rear axle and flat tire. It was reported at about 8:15 a.m..
Lakeland and Coldwater firefighters were dispatched to the scene. One lane was reopened to traffic on the northbound side about an hour later.
Michigan State Police says there were 33 head of cattle on the trailer. One animal was injured and had to be put down.
Another trailer was brought in to haul away the surviving cattle.
Michigan State Police and the Branch County Sheriff’s Department were at the scene.
