COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Administrator Bud Norman told the Board of Commissioners on Thursday that the demolition of the old Branch County Jail is scheduled to be completed by August 17.
The Branch County Board of Commissioners accepted a total bid of $324,000 from Handy Excavating of Quincy during their meeting on May 28.
Commissioners brought forward a request from Norman during the work session that Handy Excavating be paid an additional $16,200 in order to adjust the compensation for evaluation services. Formal action is scheduled for next Tuesday.
The demolition project is still considered under budget since it was estimated to cost a half million dollars.
Norman said abatement of the property will start on June 17 with demolition beginning on July 8.
The County was successful in obtaining a nearly $145,000 grant from the State of Michigan last year to offset some of the cost.
The grant was part of a program offered by the State of Michigan in which over $21 million was made available to communities to address vacant and abandoned properties.
