COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Grand Rapids man was arraigned on Monday in Branch County District Court after he allegedly conspired to bring contraband into the Lakeland Correctional Facility while he was an inmate there in July of 2022.
33-year-old Willie LaGrone was charged following a Michigan State Police investigation.
Two other persons who allegedly assisted in sending the package to the prison were identified as suspects in the case.
Court documents say LaGrone made no admissions and refused to cooperate when he was interviewed by a State Police detective about a year ago.
The package was intercepted at the prison after it had a strong and suspicious chemical smell. It was sent to the State Police crime lab in Lansing where they confirmed that some of the papers inside contained a Schedule One controlled substance.
A $5,000 personal recognizance bond was set. A probable cause hearing was set for June 20 with a preliminary exam set for June 27.
