OVID TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Ovid Township has become the latest Branch County community to allow the use of golf carts as the Township Board approved a golf cart ordinance on Monday night.
The State of Michigan prohibits the use of typical golf carts on public roads but there is an exception to the law that allows any Township of less than 30,000 people the ability to construct an ordinance which allows for the use of standard Golf Carts within certain State mandated limitations.
The newly adopted ordinance in Ovid Township sets a 15 mph speed limit and only licensed drivers 16 and over will be allowed to operate golf carts.
Golf carts are not allowed to operate from a half hour before sunset to a half hour after sunrise.
Violations would be civil infractions. The first offense could lead to a $100 fine. The second offense may result in a $300 fine with third and subsequent offenses leading to a $500 fine.
The ordinance will be administered and enforced by the Branch County Sheriff’s Office.
Golf carts are allowed in the villages of Quincy and Union City as well as the City of Bronson.
The golf cart ordinances in various Branch County communities are not connected to the recently passed Off Road Vehicle ordinance.
