Donald “Don” S. Cook, 91, of Quincy, passed away Monday, July 15, 2024 at Drews Place of Coldwater.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Quincy United Methodist Church with John Andrews officiating.
The family will receive friends for visitation starting at 1:00 p.m. till the time of the service. There will be a gathering following the service with food and drink provided at Don’s home of 278 Crockett Drive in Quincy.
Arrangements are entrusted to Eagle Funeral Home George White Chapel.
He was born on September 24, 1932, to LeRoy and Violet (Standen) Cook in River Rouge, Michigan. He married his high school sweetheart, Verla Matz, on November 7, 1955, and she survives.
Don graduated from Quincy High School then went on to graduate from Michigan State College. He worked for State Farm Insurance claims for more than 30 years and was a proud United States army veteran.
Don was a sports fanatic who participated on numerous teams over the years. He was captain of his high school basketball and football teams, later being inducted in the QHS sports hall of fame. Don was a friend to all and was even awarded Homecoming King alongside his homecoming queen, his wife Verla. He enjoyed baseball, softball, golf, tennis, and blooperball.
Later in life, he enjoyed traveling to see his family, boating, gardening, playing card games and enjoying the day sitting on the porch. He will always be remembered for being a “Wizard” at card games, his “Grandpa Strength” and constant banter.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Verla Cook; four children, DeEtt (John) Andrews of Quincy, Derek Cook of California, Paige (Tim) Mullen of Tennessee, and Anjanelle (Todd) Sikkenga of Grand Rapids; seven grandchildren, Nolan (Melissa) Andrews, Tyler Andrews, Patricia (Sean) Cook, McKennah (Matt) Williams, Alec (Caroline) Mullen, Logan (Paige) Sikkenga, and Tiffany (Travis) Schuitema; four great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Cambria, Asher, Cameron, and one on the way, Violet; and three siblings, LeRoy (Betty Clements) Cook, Margaret (Al) Wagner, and Kim (Sue) Cook.
Don is preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Gary Cook.
