SPRINGPORT, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers clinched at least a share of the Big Eight Conference championship on Friday night as they scored a 45-21 triumph over previously undefeated Springport.
Union City dominated the first half as they built a 28-0 lead and forced the state-ranked Spartans to play catch up for the rest of the night.
Eli Payne scored a pair of touchdowns while Brendan LaBar and Rick Austin both made house calls in the first half.
The Chargers got second half touchdowns from Logan Mears and Trey MacDonald and a field goal from Jason Shoop.
LaBar finished with 116 yards rushing on 14 carries. Payne passed for 104 yards and rushed for 53 yards. Austin had three catches for 32 yards.
Defensively, Caden Hughes, Alex Boyer and Aiden Decker all had six tackles.
It’s the third straight league title for the Chargers who are now 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the Big 8 Conference.
Union City has won 18 straight conference games.
They can wrap up the outright conference title next Friday if they can defeat the Quincy Orioles at Alumni Field.
The Chargers enjoyed 521-310 edge in total yards. Union City was able to gain 417 yards on the ground.
