UNDATED (WTVB) – Coldwater, Bronson, and Quincy went a combined 5-2 in softball action over the weekend.
Coldwater at Portage Northern Huskie Invitational
The Cardinals went 2-0 at the Portage Northern Huskie Invitational, defeating Coloma 8-2 and Niles Brandywine 9-2.
Mya Porter and Rylie VanAken each hit a homer, Laynie VanAken had a triple, and Vandria Bucklin doubled against Coloma. In the game against Brandywine, Rylie VanAken doubled and tripled, while Laynie VanAken had four hits, including a triple.
Coldwater improved to 12-2 on the season and will host Jackson Northwest on Tuesday. Coverage on WTVB will join the doubleheader in progress Tuesday at 5:20 p.m.
Bronson at GR Northview Invitational
The Vikings went 2-1 at the Grand Rapids Northview Invitational. They defeated Northview 6-4 and Grand Rapids West Catholic 12-6, but lost to Hudsonville Unity Christian 4-3 in the championship game.
Roni Bir had the big bat against Northview, going 2-for-3 with a triple, a homer, and three runs batted in. Ashlynn Harris gave up one walk and struck out six while also going 2-for-3 with a single, a double, and 2 RBI. Against West Catholic, Ciara Blankenship had three hits, Kailynne Scare singled and doubled, Braelynn Giminez added two hits, and Maddison Shaw had seven strikeouts. Harris and Lydia Wells doubled in the loss to Unity Christian.
Head coach Becky Gray said after the tournament, “I am very proud of the way the girls played today. We have been struggling to put everything together, pitching, defense, and hitting. I felt today we put it together against some very tough teams. This tournament always seems to bring out the best in us and today was no different. I hope we can continue on this path.”
Bronson is now 11-6 on the season and will return to action Tuesday at Springport.
Quincy at Oriole Classic
The Orioles were 1-1 in their own tournament, beating Camden-Frontier in the semifinals 13-3 in five innings and losing to Parchment 13-2 in the championship game.
Against the Redhawks, Hannah Brown struck out six in the win. Taylor Lewis had a single and an inside the park home run. Deziray Skirka doubled twice and tripled. Miley Poindexter added two hits. Against Parchment, Quincy held a 2-1 lead after three, but the Panthers pulled away by scoring 12 runs in the final four innings. Shaylee Cope had two hits and drove in a run. Deziray Skirka added two hits. Pitcher Danika Skirka struck out 7 and tried to help herself at the plate with a double in the third inning.
Quincy will take a 9-14 overall record to their doubleheader Tuesday at Union City.
