BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater earned a non-conference softball split at Battle Creek Lakeview, winning the opener 5-1 and dropping the nightcap 6-2.
In the first game, Laynie VanAken threw a complete game one-hitter with no walks and 15 strikeouts while also going 2-for-4 with a single and a double and two runs batted in. Mya Porter and Coley Burkhardt each singled and tripled, and Rylie VanAken’s solo homer was part of a 3-for-3 performance at the plate.
In the second game, Lakeview pitcher Delaney McCullough allowed only two Cardinal hits: a triple by Porter and a two-run double by Burkhardt in the fourth that gave Coldwater a 2-1 lead. Laynie VanAken relieved starter Audrina Bucklin after three innings and allowed five runs on six hits.
The Cardinals are now 17-4 and will host Jackson Northwest in a makeup doubleheader on Saturday.
BRONSON, MI – Bronson swept a Big 8 doubleheader against Stockbridge, 8-0 and 14-3, to remain perfect in conference play at 12-0.
Ashlynn Harris threw a one-hit shutout in the opener with 15 strikeouts; she also went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while Braelynn Giminez was 2-for-3 with a single and triple and Ciara Blankenship hit a two-run single.
Blankenship hit a 2-run double in the nightcap, and Kailynne Scare went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a single. Winning pitcher Madison Shaw allowed one walk and struck out seven in six innings of work.
Head coach Becky Gray notes that, “We had to fight back (in) the second game as we were down going into the 4th inning. Proud of the way the girls found a way to get 2 wins tonight.”
The Vikings improved to 16-8 overall and will host Clinton on Thursday.
QUINCY, MI – Quincy won a pair of three-inning games against Maple Valley, 18-3 and 22-7.
In the opener, Taylor Lewis allowed one hit. Danika Skirka drove in three runs with a solo inside-the-park homer and a double, while Dezirae Skirka went 3-for-3 with two singles and a double. Miley Poindexter also had a three-RBI performance.
In the nightcap, Poindexter tripled and drove in two runs, Abigail Burritt singled and tripled, Braelyn Whitcomb doubled and had three RBIs, and Danika Skirka added a double as the Orioles drew 13 walks. Poindexter and Lewis combined to allow three hits.
Quincy improved to 13-14 overall, 8-4 in the Big 8, and will participate in the Al Glick Classic Saturday in Jackson.
READING, MI – Union City split their doubleheader at Reading, taking the opener 6-3 and losing the nightcap 11-5.
Six of the Chargers’ nine hits in the first game were doubles. Tempe Sours had two doubles as she went 3-for-3; Calli Wilkinson doubled and tripled; Ellie Williams, Gracie Phelps, and Lauren Tundevold also had two-base hits. Karlie Eagen allowed four hits and struck out five.
In the nightcap, Williams homered, and Tundevold had two hits.
Union City fell to 9-13 overall, 5-7 in the Big 8, and are back in action Wednesday against visiting Mendon.
