UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – A 21-year-old male from the East Leroy area was arrested early Thursday morning after engaging in a physical altercation with a Union City Police officer and attempting to evade arrest by jumping into the St. Joseph River.
At approximately 1:42 a.m Thursday, Union City Police Officer Joe Wheeler responded to a report of a male causing a disturbance on Summit Street within the village. Upon making contact, the subject refused to identify himself and became combative as the officer attempted to take him into custody. A foot pursuit followed, during which the suspect jumped into the St. Joseph River in an attempt to flee.
Despite an extensive search, the individual was not immediately located. However, at approximately 6:50 a.m., he resurfaced and approached nearby residents and businesses. He was then taken into custody without further incident.
The subject, who was not identified, , was lodged at the Branch County Jail on a probation violation, with additional charges pending. Officer Wheeler sustained damage to his uniform and equipment during the altercation but was not injured.
The Union City Police Department was assisted by the Branch County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police, Marshall Police Department, Coldwater Police Department (K9) and the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Police Department.
