BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater wrapped up the Interstate 8 portion of its softball season with a doubleheader sweep at Harper Creek, 7-0 and 11-9.
In the opener, Laynie VanAken allowed just three hits and two walks and struck out 19 Beaver batters. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a single and an RBI double, while Mya Porter went 2-for-3 with a triple, and Mackenzie Searing drove in four runs.
The Cardinals trailed in the nightcap 9-5 after six innings. They exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh, and Laynie VanAken came on in the bottom of the frame to strike out the side and pick up the save. Coldwater cranked out 21 hits in the second game: Rylie VanAken went 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs batted in, Porter was 4-for-5, Laynie VanAken went 3-for-4, Searing was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and Coley Burkhardt went 4-for-5 with two doubles. Vandria Bucklin added a triple, while Audi Bucklin was the winning pitcher.
Coldwater improved to 21-4 overall and finished out Interstate 8 play at 10-2. They will host Paw Paw in a non-conference doubleheader next Tuesday. On that same day, Marshall (9-1 I-8) will visit Jackson Northwest (7-3 I-8) in a makeup doubleheader, with that outcome determining where the Cardinals will finish in the final league standings.
UNION CITY, MI – Union City fended off visiting Colon to earn a 4-3 victory in a back-and-forth contest.
The Chargers got on the board with one run in the second. The Magi scored two runs in the fifth; Union City responded with three in the bottom of the frame. Colon picked up one run in the seventh but stranded the game-winning run at second.
Lauren Tundevold went 2-for-4 in the game. Winning pitcher Karlie Eagen allowed one walk and struck out three.
The Chargers improved to 10-15 on the season.
