COLDWATER, MI (WTVB)- Abnormally dry conditions could hurt area farmers.
The National Drought Monitor says although Branch County isn’t officially in drought conditions due to a lack of rain, at least the southern third of the county is facing abnormally dry conditions.
During the month of August we officially saw only 0.87 inches of rain which is more than four inches below normal according to the National Climate Control Center.
With only sporadic chances of rain over the next seven to ten days the dry conditions are expected to worsen and that could begin to negatively impact crops such as corn and soy beans by stunting their growth and reducing yield. The reduced rainfall could also lead to moisture stress, making crops and other plants more susceptible to pests and disease.
