COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County is in line to receive over $32,000 as part of an opioid settlement agreement that was announced earlier this summer.
The Branch County Board of Commissioners voted during their work session on Thursday to bring forward a resolution that authorizes the county to enter into the so-called Group of 8 settlement.
The total settlement from the eight drug manufacturers came out to $720 million.
According to a statement from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel in July, the State of Michigan could receive up to $24.5 million from the settlement.
County Administrator Frank Walsh says the funds are expected to be paid to Branch County over the next 15 years and are subject to change.
Branch County has taken legal action and/or participated in legal efforts against certain opioid manufacturers, distributors and retailers who allegedly contributed to the opioid crisis.
Opioid settlements have been reached around the country that affect nearly 4,000 local governments.
Formal action is expected to be taken by Branch County Commissioners during their regular meeting next Tuesday.
