VERMONTVILLE, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers scored twice in the first six minutes and added three more scores in the second quarter as they defeated the Maple Valley Lions 36-7 on Friday night in their Big 8 Conference opener.
Trey McDonald’s six yard touchdown, a 42-yard interception return for a score by Braxton Miller and a pair of two point conversions gave Union City a 16-0 lead.
The Lions cut the lead to 16-7 on a 34 yard touchdown pass from Eli Wright to Teegan McDonald with 21 seconds left in the first quarter.
Miller accounted for Union City’s three touchdowns in the second stanza. He scored from one and two yards out and hooked up with Liam Payne on a 13 yard TD pass just ten seconds before halftime.
Neither team scored in the second half. Unofficially, the Chargers compiled 214 yards on the ground and another 46 in the air.
Kenny Case led the Union City ground attack with 113 yards on 15 carries. Trey McDonald had 44 yards on 13 carries while Dalton Hawk had 48 yards on 10 carries.
Union City’s defense turned in a dominating performance as they forced four turnovers and held the Lions to 69 yards of total offense.
The win extended Union City’s winning streak to 20 straight in Big 8 Conference games. They have not lost a conference game since Homer defeated the Chargers 28-22 on September 24, 2021.
The Chargers are now 2-0 and play their home opener against Grass Lake next Friday night at Alumni Field on team Hall of Fame Night.
