QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers grinded out over 300 yards on the ground as they romped to a 38-14 victory over the Quincy Orioles on Friday night during the Orioles Homecoming game.
The Orioles started fast and grabbed a 6-0 lead as Noah Kelley rumbled 20 yards for a touchdown just 1:09 into the game.
Quincy could not take advantage of a pair of Union City fumbles and the Chargers gradually took control as the first quarter came to an end.
Union City took the lead on a pair of Dalton Hawk second quarter touchdowns from nine and 25 yards. The Chargers were able convert both two point conversions and led 16-6 at halftime.
Union City’s gamble on fourth-and-10 midway through the third quarter paid off as Braxton Miller hooked up with Carson Liles on a 35-yard touchdown pass. The two point conversion gave Union City a 24-6 lead.
Miller’s one yard touchdown and the two point conversion with 9:04 left in the game put Union City ahead 32-6.
Kelly ran 54 yards for his second touchdown of the night for the Orioles but the Chargers Trey McDonnald closed the scoring by rumbling 35-yards for a touchdown.
Union City had 306 yards on the ground which included 187 yards from McDonald on 25 carries. Kelly had 59 yards on 17 carries.
The Chargers had a 347 to 207 edge in total yards and compiled 14 first downs compared to nine for Quincy.
Both teams are now 4-1 overall. The Chargers improved to 3-1 in the Big 8 Conference, while the Orioles fell to 2-1 in the Big 8.
