COLDWATER, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is proposing new administrative rules that would change how the state’s roadside rest areas and welcome centers are used .
These rules are designed to address issues such as long-term stays, improper use, and safety concerns at over 400 facilities throughout the state, including rest stops, scenic turnouts, and carpool lots .
The proposed changes would set a 48-hour limit for stays, prohibit camping and alcohol, and establish clear guidelines for service animals, commercial activities, and protests .
According to Greg Losch, an MDOT University Region Engineer, the new rules are necessary to provide enforceable guidelines . He says that while MDOT has had internal guidance for years, it lacked statutory backing, making it difficult to address issues .
The goal of the new rules is to create a clear “base level of expectations” for the public when using MDOT facilities, ensuring everyone is aware of the proper use . MDOT’s primary focus is not on enforcement, but on protecting both the facilities and the public by having clear, formal rules in place .
